Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for the Cabinet Office, Jenny Willott, has today enthused about the “Forces in Mind” programme, which will support the transition of veterans from the military services, back to civilian life.

A Lottery Fund  of £35 million has been set up to support projects that assist ex-soldiers experiencing difficulty in returning from combat. Research has revealed that ex-soldiers often suffer from depression, trauma, drug or alcohol abuse, as they attempt to return to a civilian lifestyle.  All too often veterans end up unemployed;  sometimes, even homeless.

Used in addition to smaller initiatives to support returning forces personnel, the fund has been designed to work alongside established organizations, such as the Royal British Legion, and Help For Heroes.

Jenny Willott (the Cardiff Central MP) has been quoted as saying:

“With around 5 million ex-service folk returning to civilian life, they need all the help available. The Big Lottery Fund of the National Lottery, is an excellent example of the good use this fund is being put to.”

“The funding will prolong the good work that existing organizations already carry out in conjunction with the veterans, enabling them to address vital issues, such as joblessness, homelessness and mental illness.”

“With an increasing number of veterans returning home from the extremely arduous conditions in Iraq and Afghanistan, the new funding initiative, is very important to their future welfare.”
