Key ‘L’ For Lottery As Selby Benefits From BIG Grant

Selby and District DIAL and Cliffe Pre-school are celebrating after the Big Lottery Fund announced grants enabling them to sustain and improve vital community activities.

BIG’s Reaching Communities programme, aimed at improving communities and the lives of needy folk, has enabled Selby good causes to share close on £400,000.

A grant of £344,445 has been allocated to Selby and District DIAL, enabling the service to function and expand its free advice, help and support role for a further five years. In addition to providing help with applying for benefits, the service also advises on equipment, and living with a disability. Workshops, mentoring and counseling, are the methods of support offered to individuals and groups.

Existing disabled people who wish to support others come to terms with their disability, by offering practical and emotional support, will benefit form the introduction of a new mentoring scheme. In addition to home visits for housebound folk, an outreach service is being introduced in Tadcaster, easing the burden of traveling to Selby.

Karen Williams, Selby and District DIAL Service Co-ordinator, said: “We are grateful for this grant from the Big Lottery Fund, which will give disabled people, their families and carers, plus continued access to free, impartial advice, help and support.”

“The money will enable us to provide numerous services, including, form–filling, representation at tribunals, home visits, outreach sessions, support groups, signposting and information. Over 2500 disabled people and their families are expected to benefit from the five year project.”

The nearby Cliffe Pre-school, in the town of Cliffe has been awarded £49,164 to commission a new prefabricated building, which will be utilized 100% for childcare services. The school will also be able to extend the opening hours to 08:00 ~ 18:00 hours, five days a week, forty eight weeks a year. Additionally, the new building is fully accessible and has modern kitchen facilities.

Preschool with learning through play activities, such as skipping, basic reading and writing, sculpture, crafts activities, identifying numbers and counting, will benefit children aged from between 2-11.

A new breakfast club, will benefit current pupils, also an after-school club, with a focus on homework help, arts and crafts, outdoor play, nature study and environmental learning. There is in addition a holiday club, open from 08:00 ~ 18:00 hours in school holidays; activities are designed to last the complete day.

Claire Smith on behalf of Cliffe Pre-school, said: “Having our own premises enables us to create childcare services within our local rural community, support families, offer employment opportunities and improve community integration. We are very grateful to have been chosen to benefit by this ‘Reaching Communities’ grant.”

Vanessa White, Big Lottery Fund Head of Region for Yorkshire and The Humber, said: “The Big Lottery Fund has granted almost £400,000 towards two very good causes in the Selby area. Both projects will benefit the local community, irrespective of whether it is providing better childcare for local children, or support for disabled folk.”
