Lottery Grant for Pontefract
A Lottery grant of some £38,500 is being added to a Council fund to present detailed proposals which will restore historic buildings, provide specialist training in heritage construction techniques and raise awareness of the history within the UK town of Pontefract.
Wakefield Council is in the process of drawing up plans as to how it will use new Heritage Lottery Funds, ultimately enabling it to restore key areas of the city, such as the Market Place in anticipation of attracting more tourists.
The proposals, developed under a Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) will support the application for additional funding of £1.5m in May 2010. THI grants are used to encourage property owners and tenants to restore historic properties and public spaces.
One area slipping into a poor state of repair is the Pontefract Market Place Conservation Area, which already includes several buildings dating from the mid 14th century. The £1.5m funding will be used to combat these issues.
Exhibitions detailing the proposals will be open in February 2010, attended by a project officer who can discuss the scheme and address questions.
It’s good to be reminded that as well as having the chance to enhance our own bank balances, Lottery grants fund a wide range of good causes. Click the banner below to see how playing in an e-Lottery syndicate gives you a better chance of winning.
