Sometimes it’s the quirky Lottery funding that gets the publicity rather than projects that are genuinely beneficial to the general public. To redress that balance, I like to bring you down-to-earth, useful applications.

One such is the Sustrans Connect2 Bridge, which was one of 79 projects decided by public vote in 2007 to receive funding from a £50 million Big Lottery Funding. This is a great use of Lottery money.

A foot and cycle bridge which will span the Great River Ouse, between Eaton Socon and Eynesbury, has finally been given the green light, with work scheduled to commence in Spring 2011, hopefully opening in Autumn of the same year. Currently, the journey between Eaton Socon and Eynesbury by foot or bicycle involves travelers in a considerable detour to reach their work, school or shops. The new 346m bridge is a real boon to the community, offering a viable alternative to using a motor vehicle.

As well as bringing a genuine public benefit this alternative route is environmentally friendly too.
